I just booked a Happy Days tour of the Kitchigami Regional Libraries which will take me from Brainerd to Bemidji with 7 other stops in between. What a wonderful opportunity to bring the stories and standard songs of the 30's 40's and 50's and the Greatest Generation to all the generations of this region! Super excited to spend time, meet all the fine folks along the way, and experience this beautiful part of Minnesota in the Fall.

Well, "Happy Days" is coming to the Bloomington Center on April 13th and 14th. My band will be Reynold Philipsek on guitar, Doug Haining on horns and Josh Granowski on upright bass. I am really excited to perform this show in my own current hometown.
As many of you know, I have traveled the state to perform the show through the wonderful MN Historical Society and MN Regional Library partnership. I am currently contracting the show myself and i am so grateful for that opportunity! I recently booked a library tour of 9 shows in the Kitchigami region for September. I am extremely excited to bring the show to that area!
As I say in the show: "Uplifting songs were needed then, and they have endured because they are still needed now"!!!

It has been an amazing year and a half working with Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) creating this show. From choosing all the material-to sitting down with a talented scriptwriter Beth Gilleland-to seeing it come alive with all of the kind and generous folks at various Minnesota libraries and venues. I thank everyone at MHS, especially Maren!, Beth, all the musicians, coordinators, librarians, volunteers and guests.

I want you to know that although MHS will not be offering this show as part of their programing, I am still interested in making "Happy Days" available, and traveling to more libraries and concert venues that are interested in a historical musical program about the 1930's, 40's and 50's with lots of national and local historical tidbits about the songs, the songwriters, the performers and the momentous time period.

Uplifting songs were needed then and they are needed now! And, as always, I would love to hear from you about your experience with the show and with questions you may have.

I will be performing the show in April 2013 at the Bloomington Center For the Arts as part of the Annual Performance Series. If you haven't guessed by now, I am a Duluth devotee. Actally, I am drawn to the North Shore, in general. But after performing in Hibbing, Grand Rapids, Virginia and Cloquet, I realize I feel very tied to an even greater geographical region. Maybe it's the iron ore. Maybe it's the bedrock. Perhaps it's the people who survived fires and rebuilt their towns from scratch. I just know that I want to return and explore even more of the region.

Since I already devoted separate blog entries for Duluth and Grand Rapids, I will leave you with a few photos from Virginia, Hibbing and Cloquet.
It was also the one that in the back of my mind, became the standard for what a great show can be. As wonderful as every audience is in their own unique way, the audience at the GR Library was especially attentive and with over 120 people, the energy was palpable. An audience member in Grand Rapids, MN inquired whether I made a recording of the union parody I did in the show (to the tune of Makin' Whoopee). I did not record this and was unable to track down another recording, so I am including the words to the union parody as a well as a video of Dinah Washington singing the original song.

I go to work when work is there
I never shirk, I do my share
It doesn’t matter, my wallet’s flatter
Without a Union.

Sometimes I sit and daydream
Wondering how things could be
Silly to some it may seem
But I’d like seniority

Need some tips on where to get some retro inspired clothing? I personally love collecting vintage clothes, but the gals in those days had much smaller waist sizes, as Via's Vintage Wear expert Kelly explained to me. On the other hand, if you want brand new clothes in sizes tiny to voluptuous try Bettie Pages's at MOA. You might even find one of the Twin Cities' favorite dance instructors and super chic retro darling at the ready to outfit you in a wonderful dress!!!

There I was faced with the dilemma of half a voice due to illness and being face to face with an intimate, captive audience. What's a singer to do? At first I was not sure that I could accomplish the task.

Actually, it was a great challenge. Great, in that it forced me to use other communication skills to get across my message. I could not rely on my sound/tone/pitch to fully communicate the song. It was as if the lyrics took the front seat, and I had to use my face and gestures more.... and I had to make sure, even though I could not always get the notes (Rick said I was limited to an Eb above middle C), I communicated with this audience. I kept thinking about all the aging singers who may not still possess their vocal prowess yet put across their songs in a completely meaningful way. And there I was, really communicating with this audience, in a completely vulnerable, authentic way. And through it all, I feel I made a very strong connection with the fine folks of Belgrade who came out for the music and stories and got them with my small croaky voice.

Thank you Kathie Harris for doing such a great job at your library and in welcoming us,
HELLO GRACEVILLE!

Thanks to their amazing librarian Vicky Grimli, and the help of Julie (and son DeAndre) from KDIO Radio, there was an amazing turnout of approximately 100 people. Folks showed up from alot of the neighboring towns including the Dakotas!

The show went really well, and afterwards, I had an elderly gentleman come up to me and sing Among My Souvenirs to me, and suggest that I add it to the show. What a beautiful suprise to be serenaded like that!

After the show, and after we were offered wonderful baked goods
which they had to twist our arms to take, (wink wink) we set out to have a late dinner. Not expecting much to be opened at 9:30 at night in rural MN, you can imagine how delighted we were to stumble upon this amazing Italian Bistro, Bella Cuccina, in Morris MN.

Boy did we ever have a fabulous meal. Rick said it put him in a meat coma and ended up falling asleep as soon as we got back to the hotel. I, on the other hand digested my food for a little while, catching up on some late night infomericials!
All in all it was a great trip. We felt very grateful that we were able to make an impact on so many people. Vicky, the librarian said that before the recent funding, this town never would have access to quality jazz concerts. That is what I call the beauty of Legacy Funding.

Rick Carlson, Gary Schulte and Jeff Breuske and I played to a wide span age group which was quite refreshing!!! I really love seeing young boys and girls in the audience enjoying the music.

Also, I had a great chat with Jeanne the librarian about how similar things are to the Great Depression and how relevant this show is to the current times even though the theme of the show is centered mostly on the 30's & 40's...

Our next stop will be Graceville MN and I am already checking out the history and particulars of the town. This is really fun for me having not grown up here in MN. It is all new to me. I found a great website with some old photos of Graceville: Vintage Graceville

This Wednesday I will be interviewed by the nearby local radio station out of nearby Ortonville. I might have to visit the Big Stone County Museum while I am there and check out the Charles Hanson North American Wildlife Collection. As I near some dates for my return to Happy Days, I am getting very excited just thinking about traveling around Minnesota and meeting all kinds of new folks and seeing new sights. I anticipate the joy of sharing my love of the Great American Songbook and the reward that I get in doing so. I will be posting my schedule for the next few months as soon as I firm up a few dates. Next stop: Cottage Grove on February 11th!!!
Please subscribe if you would like regular updates. That is what I am most looking forward to this season of the show. In the brief hiatus(part of which was spent worrying a bit about our arts and cultural heritage funding during the government shutdown etc..), I realized how much I missed touring with the show. I missed the travel, the new sights, the communities and community members young and old, and how the show is just a tidge different for the different audiences!! I look forward to sharing this show with new and familiar faces, and watching it grow. So for those Minnesotans reading this blog, I could be coming to your town soon....

Photo of Rhonda Laurie & Sidewalk Cafe courtesy of Jana FriebandRhonda Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11386491773194765043noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4614118004594650703.post-3688702523640820332011-07-23T13:42:00.000-07:002011-07-23T13:42:51.729-07:00Hope to See You Soon!Well the first leg of this wonderful tour ended in June and things had come to a grinding halt when the government shut down as the programs are funded by Legacy Funds. Well, apparently the Legacy Bill was signed after the government ended the shutdown. What that means for programming remains to be seen. I would love to continue to meet all the wonderful new people and explore all the important spots in this wonderful state. However, this year has been amazing and something I will never forget. Thanks to all of you who made this possible. Until next time...Rhonda Lauriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11386491773194765043noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4614118004594650703.post-37443844022831946522011-05-11T07:21:00.000-07:002011-05-11T07:21:22.774-07:00Jeepers Creepers!I never thought I would find a clip of this but here it is...Louis serenading Jeepers Creepers...
Someone asked for a CD from the show. It is certainly something I would love to do. I tried to get a grant to do it but did not get it. Hopefully there will be a way to record these tracks soon and have a CD available at the shows...

After the gig, Robert and I went down the block for lunch...homemade soup and salad at Three Crows, and we sat right outside on the river on the first beautiful day in May!!!
For quite a bit of the drive you have Lake Mille Lacs (enormous!) on your right. It so happened to be thawing out so I was driving through a mysterious fog that added some intrigue to the drive. I felt like it could have been an X-Files episode (without the aliens).

On my way up I stopped in Garrison to look at the lake. I found a big fish.

The lake was beginning to thaw and the air was opaque. Drive a little further, and I arrive in Aitken. Aitken has a really nice library and everyone there was so welcoming. The librarian, Mary Beth made me feel right at home. There was a local group that arranged for refreshments after the show.

The room was full and over 40 people showed up and stayed for the whole show! My accompaniment was Robert Bell on guitar, Tony Baluff on clarinet and Keith Boyles on bass. They were awesome!
There were many lips mouthing the words to the songs and many came up to me and the trio after the show to share their appreciation. Photo courtesy of Cortney Walbridge.

After the show, we were all pretty hungry, and we asked Mary Beth for a suggestion. So we went to the Tuscany Room, and had a nice lunch.
Time to head home. But not before I peek in at the old Depot Museum. I caught them just before closing and had a quick peek. Note to self: return to see the rest.
This was a great trip for me. I really felt like we connected with our audience in a meaning full way. If music conjures up memories, well then there were a lot of memories in the room that day. It was palpable.
I understand that Minnesota born film actress and singer Judy Garland performed at the opera house in Aitkin as a young child. A small display related to Ms. Garland can be found in the converted opera house, now Butler's store, in downtown Aitkin. You can be sure that I will visit there!
When I arrived, Sue Monroe was shoveling as it was a blustery snowy morning. Cortney greeted me as I entered the beautiful new library building.
I had a different band for today's show and they were wonderful! We had Robert Bell on guitar, Keith Bowles on bass and Tony Balluff on clarinet.
Afterwards we visited with folks. After packing up our gear and heading out, we decided to stop and get a bite to eat. After all, it was lunchtime! So we headed down the road and stopped at the Rustic Inn in Stacy, MN

We had a delicious lunch and were served by the best waitress: Her name is Rhonda!

After pie and coffee it was time to hit the road. When I get some photos from the show I will post them. Soup and pie was served and lots of folks were congregating as we waited. Father Hennepin State Park is right there in Isle:

I had to take this photo from the road at the park, so it's not much to see but a few ice houses and I think the Isle water tower in the distance.

Anyway---we had a great crowd. Alot of folks told us it brought back memories, and we even got a suggestion!!! Katherine took a nice video of one of our tunes. Visit my facebook @ facebook.com/rhondalaurie and you can see us playing Love Is Just Around The Corner.
